Windows 8 Boots Faster Than Windows Phone 7, Drops Boot Splash

September 8, 2011

For those who remember the iconic Windows 95 boot splash screen and its evolution, I noticed some sad news. Windows 8 doesn’t seem to have a boot splash screen (only a custom OEM screen or POST screen). I remember the old days of customizing the boot screen to match my desktop theme and I miss it.

However, here is some crazy information. The video Microsoft showed has Windows 8 booting unbelievably fast. So much so that I compare it to the Windows Phone 7 and Windows 8 is much quicker! A full desktop OS booting faster than a mobile OS is impressive.

I did not compare it to that of an iPad but I’m sure Windows 8 will be as quick if not faster.

Its not quite clear whether this boots the actual Windows 8 Desktop environment or just the Windows 8 Tablet mode.

Also if the notebook has an hardware like a fast SSD then it makes a whole lotta difference too.

But if this actually does boot an entire Desktop environment in less than 10 seconds then thats some kinda of a new record for sure!

This particular demo vid from MSFT is has a few things to favor MSFT:

      a) SSD+UEFI
      b) The boot is from a new implementation of hibernate (OS state is saved not the apps)

Windows 8 boot is layered and “smarter”. In the now standard boot windows desktop shell is not called or loaded. Neither are some other things. What is loaded is the Start Menu that is the Immersive UI-UX. Would like to explain it in detail, but why not wait for //Build for it.  ;)

Remember that the phone has to connect to the cell network, too.
