Now, I’ve written and tweeted quite a bit about Zune and the future of the brand. I see Microsoft not talking about it as a sign of them phasing out the brand rather than “killing” it. Today, Steven Sinofsky showed the much-anticipated Metro UI in Windows 8 targeted towards tablets and other than the Store tile that I spotted, the Video and Music tiles are separate, unlike on the phone where there is a Music+Video tile. Looking more closely, the Music tile does not have the Zune logo which is present on the Windows Phone 7’s Music+Video tile. Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the Music tile on the phone & that shown at D9:

You’re free to derive your own conclusions. I’m just pointing it out.

Perhaps MS doesn’t like a reminder of its poorly performing music player floating about anymore. Either way, whats in a name? As long as they come up with quality media products, end users have nothing to complain about. And its the naked truth, MS knows its multimedia. Players, codecs, et al.
“Poorly Performing” – maybe the brand, but the device itself along with the service is fantastic – blows away apple. Win Phone 7 does not do the music quality any justice – the Zune hardware was excellent. – Just feel the need to pint this out.
Anyone know what’s happening to the movies and music videos that have been purchased?
I’m running Win8 Developer and Zune is still in there….and is new Windows phones too. Suggest that you back up music/movies but all should be viewable on next Windows OS/phone
